Led by Dominic Ingham and other guest tutors, the Jazz & Improvisation Course is now a firm feature of Chetham’s Summer School since launching in 2025. The programme focuses on small group improvisation, jam sessions and musical exploration, culminating in a final performance in the world class Carole Nash Hall.<\/p>\n
We welcome applications from rhythm section players and front-line solo instruments who have an interest in jazz and improvisation. Although formal grades aren’t necessary, applicants should have the ability to;<\/p>\n
Drums \u2013 play a swing beat (swing feel) and bossa nova, with experience playing in a small band or big band.<\/p>\n
Bass (electric or double bass) \u2013 read through chord changes playing a walking bass line, with experience playing in a small band or big band.<\/p>\n
Guitar (electric or acoustic) \u2013 read through chord changes, with experience playing in a small band or big band.<\/p>\n
Piano \u2013 read through chord changes, with experience playing in a small band or big band.<\/p>\n
Front line instruments e.g. saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, violin etc \u2013 experience playing solos and improvising in a jazz context.<\/p>\n
Vocalists – experience singing jazz standards<\/p>\n
Participants will also join in with group activities to the rest of the course, including singing and musicianship, with plenty of opportunity for mixing with the other courses. <\/p>\n
