On Friday 4 July, the next chapter in Chetham\u2019s orchestral story began with a powerful and unforgettable concert at BBC Philharmonic Studios, MediaCityUK. This was no ordinary performance, but the launch of an exciting three-year partnership<\/strong> between Chetham\u2019s School of Music and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong><\/a>, bringing together young musicians and seasoned professionals in a unique side-by-side collaboration.<\/p>\n

From now through to 2027, every orchestral student in Chetham\u2019s Middle School<\/strong><\/a> and Sixth Form<\/strong><\/a> will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside players from one of the UK\u2019s finest orchestras. It\u2019s a bold commitment to hands-on, professional-level music education, and a remarkable opportunity for our students to develop confidence, musicality and ambition in a real-world setting.<\/p>\n

A Royal Audience<\/h3>\n

We were honoured to welcome a very special audience for this landmark occasion. Our Patron, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh<\/strong>, joined a distinguished group of civic guests including the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester and the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford. Their presence reflected the importance of this partnership as both a musical milestone and a cultural investment in the region\u2019s young talent.<\/p>\n

A Night to Remember<\/h3>\n

The launch concert, performed by Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra side-by-side with select members of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, featured an ambitious and vibrant programme that matched the scale of the occasion. It opened with Mark-Anthony Turnage\u2019s Hammered Out<\/em><\/strong>, a fiercely energetic piece with jazz and funk influences that showcased the full force of the brass and percussion sections.<\/p>\n

Next came Roxanna Panufnik\u2019s Alma\u2019s Songs Without Words<\/em><\/strong>, a lyrical and emotionally charged work inspired by the poetry of Alma Mahler and performed with great sensitivity by the expanded orchestra.<\/p>\n

The evening concluded with a thrilling performance of Gershwin\u2019s Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture<\/em><\/strong>, arranged by Robert Russell Bennett, weaving together some of the opera\u2019s most iconic melodies like \u201cSummertime\u201d and \u201cIt Ain\u2019t Necessarily So\u201d in a dazzling orchestral showcase.<\/p>\n

All under the baton of conductor Lee Reynolds<\/strong>, the music was delivered with passion and polish, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in the room.<\/p>\n

A Partnership with Deep Roots<\/h3>\n

This new initiative builds on an already strong relationship between Chetham\u2019s and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. In October 2024, Chetham\u2019s vocal students joined the orchestra to record the colour of all things constant<\/em>\u00a0by Cassie Kinoshi<\/strong>, part of the BBC Ten Pieces series. The project, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3<\/strong> from Aviva Studios, also featured Chetham\u2019s Sixth Form horn player Claire Marsden<\/strong><\/a> and was performed for an audience of schoolchildren from across Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n

Several members of the BBC Philharmonic are themselves Chetham\u2019s alumni, proof of the powerful musical pathway this partnership continues to nurture.<\/p>\n

What They Said<\/h3>\n

\u201cThis partnership is everything Chetham\u2019s stands for: excellence, opportunity and collaboration,\u201d said Tom Redmond<\/strong>, Joint Principal and Director of Music at Chetham\u2019s School of Music. \u201cTo have our students learning side-by-side with one of the UK\u2019s great orchestras will be transformative for their musical development, confidence, professionalism and ambition. It\u2019s a real statement about what music education can and should be, and highlights what a collaborative city Manchester is for music and the arts.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Szabo<\/strong>, Director of the BBC Philharmonic, added: \u201cLearning is at the heart of our work at the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and we are thrilled to be developing our creative partnership with the students from Chetham\u2019s School of Music. Working with Chetham\u2019s allows our musicians to share their craft with the next generation, and in turn, be inspired by the talent and dedication of these exceptional students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shirlene Ohara<\/strong>, a Year 13 student at Chetham’s, said: \u201cPlaying with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra is kind of nerve-wracking but exciting at the same time. There\u2019s a lot to learn there about music as a career.\u201d Shirlene was Principal Violinist for Hammered Out<\/em> and will continue her studies in September at the Royal Northern College of Music.
